St Pauls Carnival

St Pauls Carnival is an iconic Bristol event that represents the best of African Caribbean culture, as well as the diversity, creativity and vibrancy of its home city, Bristol.

At the heart of carnival is our masquerade procession where the most vibrant colours of carnival are matched by big sound-system sounds. Floats are put on by local schools, community groups and visiting troupes to showcase the best in carnival culture. Wandering down the streets of St Pauls you’ll discover new tastes, sounds, dances and friends in an event that brings communities together through a celebration of unity. Professional performers on main stages, homegrown talent on a neighbouring street, freshly cooked food at trader stalls. This carnival is put on by the community, for the community and everyone who wants to celebrate with it!

Bristol Pride: Stonewall Remembered | Flag Raising

Bristol Pride: Stonewall Remembered | Flag Raising

The Stonewall Riots were a series protests by members of the gay community rising up against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of what is seen as the birth of the LGBT+ liberation movement across the globe. Without the Stonewall Riots, and those brave individuals who stood up and said enough, there wouldn't be Pride events.

It's fitting that this also marks the start of the 2019 Bristol Pride festival and the flag will remain flying for Pride as we both remember our history and those who have fought hard for our rights, and that we still fight on. It's also to celebrate how far we have come and to visibly showcase our community.

FREAK by Anna Jordan (produced by Bullet Theatre.)

‘They think I am the most beautiful thing in the world. And I don’t mind being a thing. I don’t want their respect. I want only their animal desire.’

'Raw, sexy and salacious' ***** (Epigram.org.uk).

FREAK explores female sexuality, self-image and sexual exploitation. It follows the lives of two women of different ages, embarking on very different experiences, as the same societal ideals influence their decisions. Compelled by the recent shedding of light on sexual abuse in the media and the cancellation of compulsory consent workshops at universities, Bristol-based company Bullet Theatre boldly and unashamedly explore the experience of being female, combining unique choreography with Anna Jordan's poetic writing. After 5-star, sell-out runs in Bristol and the Edinburgh Fringe, FREAK makes its London debut at the Chapel Playhouse this March.

Produced all by the very lovely, very talented Doppler creators Bullet Theatre

The Paper Man @ The Tobacco Factory
Jan

to Jan 27

The Paper Man @ The Tobacco Factory

The legendarily anarchic Improbable return to Bristol with The Paper Man, an intriguing true story of political protest, power and football. Improvisation impresarios, never shy to tackle the sensitive social and cultural complexities that affect us all, Improbable leave audiences surprised, unsettled and hugely entertained.

In 1938, Austrian football star Matthias Sindelar humiliated the Nazi regime by refusing to throw a match. A few months later, he was dead. Accident, suicide or execution? Inspirational little guy or yet another man and his ego? Who cares?

Middle aged, white British, football addict-in-recovery, Lee Simpson wants answers. He hires some women to make a show about football, Nazis, and our future. In a paper world of light and shadow, violence and dance, five performers work together on what sets them apart.

Exhibition: Mai-Thu Perret The Blazing World at Spike Island

Mai-Thu Perret’s multidisciplinary practice intertwines seemingly diverse traditions such as Modernism, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Eastern spiritualities. In 1999 Perret created The Crystal Frontier, a fictional all-women commune located in the New Mexico desert. The story of this autonomous community provides the framework for Perret’s interest in radical feminist politics and the objects she presents often masquerade as the ‘hypothetical production’ of the women inside The Crystal Frontier.

The Blazing World, Perret’s first major solo exhibition in the UK, explores the subject of witchcraft and the relationship between women’s oppression and the emergence of capitalism. In her immersive installation at Spike Island, a theatrical stage recalls sacred forms of architecture and is punctuated with ritualistic sculptures, puppets and textiles.
