Celebrating Inspirational Women in March

Here at Doppler, we’re very grateful to be surrounded by inspiring, wonderful women, and to celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we wanted to shout about those women. But there were so many that we felt that just one day wasn’t enough, so instead of just one post on 8th March, we dedicated all of March to celebrating inspirational women.

We’ve had so much fun celebrating and sharing these inspirational women, that we’ve decided to make this a regular feature in our social calendar, and it’ll be back next year! So if you have someone to nominate get in touch.

Thank you so much to everyone who took part, for inspiring us and giving us permission to splash them across our social media.

A small act of kindness can go a long way and we have been honoured to provide a platform to celebrate women. We wanted to celebrate the women in our lives who are doing amazing things, rather than just famous people and celebrities getting all of the recognition.

In case you missed the posts on our social media channels, read on to find out more about everyone that we featured in 2021.

Marie Curie

Possibly one of the most famous scientists of all time, Marie Curie was a Polish scientist. After moving to France, Marie Curie met her husband Pierre, and together they had discoveries that led to them being awarded a Nobel Prize in 1903. In 1911, Marie Curie won another Nobel Prize, this time on her own and became the first woman to win it. Marie and Pierre Curie made ground-breaking discoveries in radioactivity, as well as discovering two new chemical elements: polonium and radium. These discoveries were all vital in the development of radiotherapy, as well X-rays. In fact, their discoveries meant that Marie Curie was able to develop a portable X-ray unit that could be used near the battlefront during World War One. Isn't that incredible?

Amelia Earhart

If there was anyone who believed in their dreams, it was Amelia Earhart! She became the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean! Did you know that Amelia Earhart would sleep in her leather jacket to make it seem more worn, so she'd be taken seriously? It took a huge amount of courage and bravery to fly across oceans alone, but she was dedicated to doing everything in her power to achieve her dreams!

Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.'

More than ever, we're living in a world where we're supposed to have it all: a successful career, a happy family, a full social life, be up to date with the news and world events, holidays, health, cook healthy meals and look great whilst doing it. There can be this pressure to really have it all together. What we love is how Dr Brené Brown wants us to break free from these suffocating ideas of perfection. The Power of Vulnerability, her 2010 TEDx talk is one of the world's top ten most viewed TED talks, and one of her key messages is really to just embrace the imperfectness of life. And we love that here at Doppler!

Greta Thunberg

Greta is a Swedish environmental activist who is known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action for climate change mitigation. Beginning when she was 15, Greta started spending her school days outside the Swedish Parliament to call for stronger action on climate change by holding up a sign saying Skolstrejk för klimatet (School strike for climate). Soon other students held similar protests in their own communities. After Greta addressed the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, student strikes took place every week somewhere in the world. In 2019, there were multiple coordinated multi-city protests, with over a million students across the world involved. The climate crisis and being more environmentally conscious is so important to us here at Doppler, and we love that Greta has stood up to demand a difference.

In March, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was finally reunited with her husband and daughter in the UK after years of detention in Iran. Six years ago, Richard Ratcliffe stood at Gatwick Airport, waving goodbye to his wife as Nazanin was taking Gabriella with her to Iran to see her grandparents. Richard had no reason to believe they wouldn't be back home a couple of weeks later. Last week, Nazanin finally stepped off a plane at RAF Brize Norton. After years of detention, she and fellow British Iranian Anoosheh Ashoori were finally coming home. A little voice asked: "Is that Mummy?" Gabriella, now seven, rushed to hug her mother. Such bravery and courage has been shown all round, and we're so, so inspired by Nazanin's story.

Collette is incredible, she has so much passion and drive. From that conversation, they worked towards creating a solution starting with addressing access to devices!

Tech Inclusion UK has gone from a small project to a long term sustainable and circular solution to benefit education and the environment.
